Williamsburg's History

The Bandstand

Stone Church 1.jpg

Our bandstand has graced the city for more than 90 years. It has been the focal point of many political rallies, programs, weddings, graduations, Jayhawker Day celebrations and countless hours of play to area children. We view it as one of our unique features of Williamsburg. The community came together in 2012, with the help of the City of Williamsburg, to restore it as one of our historic landmarks. The restoration of the bandstand will ensure future generations the opportunity to incorporate it into their events and memories.

The Williamsburg Cannon

Stone Church 1.jpg

This cannon stands at the entrance of our city park. It is a 120mm Fortress or Siege gun and must be considered a very rare piece of memorial military material. These guns were probably built in Germany or Belgium under the direction of the German Krupp Arms Company. As of July 2002, there are only two known examples of this gun on the North American continent. Often, local politicians or high ranking Army officers with hometown ties were instrumental in obtaining these donations. This may very well be the case with the Williamsburg gun.

Williamsburg Community Museum

The Williamsburg Community Museum started small. Mae Kesner and Judy Simpson bought the old Free Methodist Church in 2000. The back of the church was to be the museum with the front preserved as the Church. Soon many artifacts of the Williamsburg area were donated and quickly filled the space. Other buildings were erected and filled. The fellowship hall by the Church is used for small gatherings and the Spring Tea. This is another example of our community spirit.

Williamsburg Community Building

This Wonderful Building is an example of our community spirit. The Williamsburg High School house building class of 1986-1987 started construction on a community building on Williams Street downtown Williamsburg. Everyone pulled together doing drawings, fund raisers, serving sales, reviving Jayhawker Day and donations from groups and individuals to raise funds for a building. By fall 1986, over $47,000 had been raised. The community bought the lot, previous home of the Sinclair station. It became the new location of our beautiful Community Building. Weddings, family reunions, showers and community events, etc. are held in our beautiful building. It's something our community is quite proud of. The nice city park across the street is a definite plus.
